The City of Stuttgart is situated in one of the economically most powerful and innovate regions in Europe. In geographical, economic and political terms the Stuttgart Region is at the very centre of the federal state of Baden-Württemberg in the south-west of the Federal Republic of Germany. Stuttgart ranks as one of the safest metropolises in Europe.
Stuttgart is home to around 590,000 inhabitants, 22% being foreign residents.
The greater area of Stuttgart has a population of 2,7 million.
Stuttgart has a rich and varied cultural life, with events catering to a wide range of tastes – from the ultra-trendy hip-hop scene to world-class ballet and the award-winning Stuttgart Opera House. And that’s not all: there are also many theatres, art galleries, festivals, fairs and concerts – both indoor and outdoor. There is also plenty for sport enthusiasts – whether as spectators at top international events, or as active participants in one of the many sports clubs. With 5.6 km² of parks and gardens, Stuttgart is one of Europe’s greenest cities. And idyllic countryside is only a short train ride from the heart of the metropolis.
Nature-lovers can take their pick from the nearby rolling hills, woods and lakes. For those who like a change of scenery, the Black Forest, Lake Constance, Alsace, and the Swiss and Austrian Alps are all within easy travelling distance.

The world's first TV tower
Originally what was then the Sü ddeutsche Rundfunk wanted to set up its antennas for the transmission of television and VHF radio broadcasts at a height of 200 meters on an iron grid pole which was secured by steel wire rope, as it was common at the time.
For this monstrous project, the Stuttgart engineer Prof. Fritz Leonhardt, who had become famous as a builder of bridges and a structural engineer, was called in. It was his idea to have an elegant concrete needle grow out of the forests of Degerloch instead of an ugly grated pole and to provide this with a tower construction with a viewing platform which could be used for tourists and gastronomy.
From no other point in Stuttgart is the view of the city, of the vineyard landscape of the Neckar Valley, of the Swabian land up to the Alb, to the Black Forest and to the Odenwald so comprehensive as from the television tower. Many days a year, the panorama also includes the mountain summits of the German, Austrian and Swiss Alps.
For the well-being of the visitors, the television tower has an efficient gastronomy to offer. At the foot of the tower, the Ristorante Primafila and in the summer the large beer garden invite you to come and enjoy yourself.
In the summer of 2005, the television tower was completely renovated, since 1 December 2005 it has been opened again to the public.

Castles and palaces in the Stuttgart region
The Stuttgart region has an unusually large number of formidable castles, magnificent palaces and grand stately homes.
Many of them are visible from afar, perched on outcrops of rock, mountain peaks or hilltops, others are hidden behind solid walls or in the middle of huge parks. All of them are inextricably linked to the history of Germany or Europe and make it come alive in an extremely vivid way. Today, only very few castles and palaces are used as private homes. Many of them are open to visitors as interesting and outstanding museums, some also serve as congress and conference centres.
